Shafted!

Well I was saving this one for a rainy day, but I guess today is truly as good as any other day.
R.I.P. Isaac Hayes 1942-2008
Chef's gone! Well, technically Chef has been 'gone' for a while, but unless you were living in a cave, or a Scientology Testing Center yesterday, the great Issac Hayes passed away. Scientology jokes aside, the man's contribution to funk and soul plays second fiddle only to James Brown.
While he left behind a string of classics, here's his most infamous
The Theme to Shaft
.

I'm going to do things a tad differently today, for sake of time and the sheer fucking volume of it all, by simply listing genres and artist names. No long winded descriptions of bands or childhood memories.

Enjoy!

Wonderful. Thank you.

Wearing gold chains and singing in a velvet voice, Isaac Hayes was a wondrous performer, a legend who influenced many. RIP.

Fantastic Post!
I walked into a store on saturday hearing a great rocksteady version of Shaft and the stoned clerk couldn´ tell me what it was. Thanks to your great tribute I found more versions to shake a SHAFT at!
I only heard later that Hayes had died.

i once interviewed Mr Hayes for a magazine in the late 90's.
he had no idea that so many artists had covered "Shaft". So, I made him up a compilation (90% of which are here on your blog all these years later!) and sent to him in the U.S.
he loved them all.
particularly, the robo-vocoder voiced dutch electro version by Van Twist (green vinyl!).
